A Tale of Two Tires

Suppose life was different and you worked as a Fleet Tire Manager for a large logistics company. And part of your job was to buy tires for all your long-haul trucks.

On his next visit, your sales rep, who’s become a trusted friend over the years, offers you two types of tires: a traditional tire and an IoT tire. The first tire, like all the tires you bought from him before, is going to last 80,000 miles before needing to be replaced. But the IoT tire is different.

The safety of your drivers is your top priority and by monitoring its pressure, the IoT tire eliminates the number one cause of catastrophic tire blowouts: underinflation, and it will signal you when your drivers are driving too fast or erratically.

Which tire would you buy –  the traditional tire or the safer IoT tire?

Sometimes the IoT tire will instruct you to replace itself before 80,000 miles due to a harder driving history, but most of the time it can be safely driven over 100,000 miles.  Driving on tires longer and increasing fuel efficiency by maintaining the correct tire pressure and calling out speeding drivers – all save money.

Which tire would you buy – the traditional tire or the IoT tire that saves you money?

And finally, mapping tire pressure to location produces valuable information you can sell about road conditions.

Which tire would you buy – the traditional tire or the IoT tire that increases safety, lowers costs and provides new revenue streams?

The answer is clear.  You would buy the IoT tire.

If the Internet of Things can be leveraged by even the dumbest of commodity goods, such as tires, just think what it could do for the products you make or the products you buy, for your company.
